A 6-year-old child has died after being struck by a car in North Belle Vernon, Westmoreland County.
It happened along the 400 block of Fayette Street Friday morning around 8:10 a.m.
Sky 4 flew over the scene, where officers were spotted investigating the incident. The immediate area is surrounded by crime scene tape.
The child’s mother spoke with Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 and identified her as Aria Woznick.
Police told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 Aria went to cross the street and stepped in front of a car. The driver stopped and remained on the scene.
The county medical examiner said in a report that Aria had died at UPMC Children’s Hospital.
Buddy Blackburn’s two kids were at the bus stop and witnessed the crash he says he was there almost immediately putting his jacket on Aria as first responders arrived on scene.
“It makes me angry, honestly it does, because there’s a lot of stuff you can do to prevent his stuff,” Blackburn said. “Stop signs, speed limits, watch out for children, there’s a lot of kids around here.”
Belle Vernon Area School District Superintendent Kenneth A. Williams said Aria was waiting for her bus when she was struck. Williams said she was a student at Marion Elementary.
Williams said school counselors and members of the Westmoreland County Disaster Crisis Outreach and Referral Team team have been on site at Marion Elementary School to provide support and counseling services to students and staff.
Additional counseling services will be available for students, faculty, and community members on Saturday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the North Belle Vernon Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall located at 543 Broad Avenue North Belle Vernon, PA 15012.
